2004-05 High School Graduation Rates Released

Education Week and the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center have issued a report that showed a rise in Kentucky's high school graduation rate. For the 2004-05 academic year, Kentucky's rate was 71.5 percent, compared to 65.3 in 2000-01. Kentucky's rate was the 29th best and is slightly ahead of the national rate of 70.6. Nearby Virginia had a higher rate: 72.9 percent, 1.4 percent higher than Kentucky and 2.6 percent higher than the national percentage.

The graduation rate for Kentucky's 5th Congressional District, which includes Eastern and Southern Kentucky, was 68%. Below are the rates for districts in Letcher and surrounding counties:

Letcher County: 55.2
Jenkins Independent: 72.5
Knott County: 55.7
Perry County: 65.6
Hazard Independent: 89.7
Pike County: 70.5
Pikeville Independent: 65.8
Harlan County: 73.8
Harlan Independent: 45.9
Wise County, VA: 77.4
Norton City, VA: 72.7
